Introduction - OpportunityKnox

In his infinite wisdom God makes each one of us an artist. He blesses everyone with at least one area of expertise, a talent that provides personal fulfillment, evokes passion and enhances our world. C. P. Knox has truly found his canvas, figuratively and literally. Each blank canvas ushers an infinite range of possibilities as his unique usage of textures, colors and shapes introduce his work's foundation. As these elements blend, the definition becomes apparent resulting in a final product that captures the very essence of the people, event and scene being depicted. And, as is typically the case with talent nurtured, completed work that is instinctive and natural to him is masterful and awe inspiring to others who observe it.

The C. P. Knox Story

Born of humble beginnings, Knox was a typical city kid. His mother and father provided a strong foundation of discipline and love for Knox and his siblings. Like many children in his neighborhood, Knox practically ‘lived in church’, fostering a deep appreciation for religion. He developed an interest in Gospel music, singing in the choir during various stages of his childhood. Sports, including Football, Baseball and Boxing, served as a good way to pass the time. But with none of the present day TVs, computers and video games available, the most popular pastime for the six-year-old Knox and his friends was drawing in the street. Using materials found, countless hours were absorbed in this activity. His first grade teacher, recognizing talent and desire, enthusiastically provided used watercolor supplies. By the age of eight Knox was converting index cards to popular watercolor renditions of religious events for sale. In junior high, interest continued to peak. His teacher Ms. Patterson contributed a good deal of encouragement, securing a scholarship for Knox during his ninth school year. Believing high school graduation to be a priority however, he declined. Free time was spent in the church basement, where he received tutelage from an established artist. By the age of thirteen Knox knew art would be his future livelihood.

In high school he won numerous contests. These honors served to further validate the depth of his talent. His interest was further peak by two instructors who developed an interest in Knox’s work. Mr. Michaels and Mr. Harmon, ensured he had all the materials and creative freedom needed to facilitate artistic development. It was a scholarship established by these instructors which allowed him to enroll in college. Knox’s studies were interrupted however when he was drafted during the Second World War. His military career involved efforts in six campaigns, including landing on Omaha Beach. Once the war ended, he returned to school, studying drawing, color and design, watercolor, painting and illustration. After class, Knox spent most of his time either completing assignments or earning money as a freelance mural painter. Culminating with a term project, "Charging Warriors", being named to "Who’s Who in Black Art", Knox’s formal education proved both comprehensive and invaluable.

From that point, Knox would forge a successful career as an illustrator and painter – along the way raising a big family with his loving wife. And while his experiences have been vast, he never strayed from the elementary values he was reared with – the same values intrinsic in his work. And though recently the almighty saw fit to call him back home, we will forever be blessed with the distinctive, majestic works of one of the truly talented artists of our time.

Rest in peace Mr. Knox.
